Electrical Fixes

Minor electrical repairs and replacements handled safely. Light fixtures, switches, outlets, and related work done correctly from the start.

Safe, Careful Minor Electrical Work

Electrical issues in the home range from straightforward to potentially hazardous, and the difference isn't always obvious from the outside. A switch that sparks when you use it, an outlet that has stopped working, or a ceiling fixture that flickers — these might have simple causes or they might indicate something that needs closer attention.

Jer Repair handles the minor end of this spectrum: replacing switches and outlets, swapping out fixtures, installing ceiling fans, and other work that doesn't require a licensed electrician. Every job begins with the power off at the breaker, and we verify this before touching any wiring.

If we assess a situation and find something that warrants a licensed electrician — wiring that doesn't look right, a panel issue, or anything involving permits — we'll tell you that directly and recommend you have a licensed tradesperson look at it. We won't proceed with work that isn't safe or appropriate for our scope.

What We Can Help With

  • Light fixture removal and replacement (ceiling, wall)
  • Ceiling fan installation and replacement
  • Switch replacement — standard, three-way, dimmer
  • Outlet replacement — standard, GFCI
  • Cover plate replacement
  • Smoke and CO detector installation and battery service
  • Non-working outlet troubleshooting (tripped GFCI, etc.)
  • Under-cabinet lighting installation (plug-in)

Safety first: We always turn off the circuit breaker before any electrical work and verify power is off before touching wiring. We do not work on live circuits under any circumstances.

Electrical Repair Questions

One of my outlets stopped working — can you fix it?
Often, yes. A non-working outlet is frequently caused by a tripped GFCI outlet elsewhere on the circuit — something we check first. If the outlet itself has failed, replacement is usually straightforward. If we find evidence of a wiring issue, we'll advise you to contact a licensed electrician.
Can you replace my old ceiling light with a new fixture I bought?
Yes, for a standard fixture swap where the existing wiring is compatible. Let us know the fixture type when you contact us. Very heavy fixtures or those requiring structural support may need additional work — we'll tell you this upfront.
A switch in my house sparks occasionally. Is that serious?
A small spark when switching on a high-draw appliance can be normal. Repeated sparking, or sparking on low-draw lights, usually indicates a failing switch that should be replaced. If there's any burning smell or discolouration, don't use the switch and contact us or a licensed electrician right away.
Can you install a ceiling fan where there's currently just a light fixture?
Yes, provided the existing electrical box is rated for a fan (most modern ones are). If the box needs to be upgraded to a fan-rated box, that's a straightforward additional step we can handle in the same visit.
